I have to assume that the suit that the girl was wearing kept her alive when she was upside-down in the water at the barrier, because she was theoretically upside down for a long time from the perspective of the outside. But even so they escape but it's the future, far beyond now or then. The cavemen must be eating well, but from their perspective a nonstop stream of wildlife and humanoids are bursting through the door, right? We're also introduced to someone from the future who just wants the water from the cave, he saves them partly before dying because a caveman pulls his mask off.
Which is why I have a problem with the barrier. I think the same thing would happen with the ladder. I don't see why space man wouldn't bring that with him. The entire thing is just a mix of fun and wtf moments. We also know later he's really looking for his parents who went looking for the fountain of youth. But damn I really enjoyed this movie. And then the future humans who are taller and they can't handle the changed atmosphere just ahhh.
My guess is it's natural and just there, but there are some issues with this theory. Or perhaps they knew anyone who went down would be on a short one-way trip and deem it a waste. So the cool part is we know humans of the future are using the water from the pool, or they've created their own because we have 2 pools that revive everyone.
