It's a great idea and it has a lot going for it, most of which seems to be lingering below the surface rather than fully realized on the screen. Inside, a dead soldier turns to bite Rick. An overdosed Nick witnesses a grisly scene of cannibalism at his crack house. Now they're all over the street. Fear the Walking Dead presents audiences with a different look at the zombie apocalypse, traveling across the country from rural Georgia to urban L. He approaches a farmhouse where he makes the grisly discovery that a man has shot his wife and committed suicide. But anecdotal evidence quickly becomes a very real phenomena.
Through a doorway, Rick sees the ravaged body of a nurse missing most of her skin. The woman walks to the front door and tries to open it. Rick approaches the overturned car. Earlier, Rick and his partner Shane eat hamburgers in their car and joke about the differences between men and women. The Center for Disease Control — where they're rumored to be working on a cure — is also in Atlanta.
The series has been well received by critics and nominated for several awards, including the for and the for. Anchor Bay's Blu-ray release of Fear the Walking Dead: The Complete First Season yields technically good, if not a bit underwhelming, video and audio. Like the video quality, there's nothing all that exciting going on, but the track handles the show's requirements well enough. Fear the Walking Dead seems only able to hint at the dramatic depth, complex characters, social commentary, and grisly excitement of the main show. The core idea behind the show is fantastic and a natural companion to the universe.

The bland urban landscape doesn't offer much beyond some signage and graffiti, while clothing hues and shades around various locations, like homes and schools, are sufficiently robust and natural. Rick loads the weapons in the trunk of his cruiser and prepares to set off for Atlanta. Morgan explains there's a refugee center there with military protection and food. Rick finds a horse nearby, saddles up, and rides the rest of the way to Atlanta. The series has its moments and flashes both potential and brilliance, but it has a long way to go before it can stand alongside its long established classic companion show.
