She tells him she will spare his life because she believes his devotion to France and that the betrayal would break the King's heart. He advises the Cardinal to use him as bait to get the letter back. On their own Porthos and D'Artagnan rescue their comrades and together defeat their enemies, including Feron. Under Musketeer protection the Queen, at a forest pool known for its powers of fertility, escapes an assassination attempt and with Aramis and Athos they flee to a convent pursued by the attackers who lay siege to the convent. The King asks Aramis to accompany him on a pilgrimage to his father's grave and confronts him about his affair with Anne. Seeing their smiles, she turns around to find Athos standing there, very much alive.
Athos takes a woman hostage in the square, and the Musketeers are amazed to discover he is threatening none other than Milady. The cardinal orders Milady to dispose of the Musketeers, fearful that he may be discovered as the brains behind the attempt on Queen Anne's life.
