As the committee worked to improve the overall experience, and seek feedback from the winners from the previous year, they found that, although they were rewarding finalists with a variety of cash prices, the winners shared it was not the cash awards that were the primary incentives for their participation in the Challenge. As these aliens are found they go back to the Treehouse where players can see them and other rewards they have earned. The finalists were eligible for five awards: Best Overall Serious Game, Best Small Business Serious Game, Best Government Serious Game and Best Student Serious Game, selected by a panel of nearly 50 distinguished serious game experts from academia, government, and industry. Each of these is then divided up by continent. Age of Ecology is inspired by the environmentally non-sustainable aspects of existing strategy games. Playing as Joko, children help find Joko's missing alien friends that have gotten lost while exploring earth. As part of their award package, Wein and Jackson each received a copy of Adobe® Director® 11 and Autodesk® 3ds Max® 2009.
SimuSurg is available for free at the app and play stores. During development there were two big demands from the research and focus testing. It also is an easy platform for quick builds of the game in the prototyping phase. For Pocket Planet we wanted to have the learning deeply embedded, and so the act of moving in the game involves spinning the globe and learning about geography. Canadian Forces Direct Action is a tactical first person shooter that accurately mimics the real world rules of engagement of the Canadian Army. Real-world Canadian weaponry and tactical aids such as flash-bang grenades and pepper spray are used to carry out missions in the simulated urban environments which have been created to accurately represent real-world locations using geo-location data. The winner of the People's Choice Award was Canadian Forces: Direct Action, developed by the Army Learning Support Center, Canadian Armed Forces. It made sense to seek game submissions for all who were interested, and the size of the organization or business should not be a determining factor of accepting a submission. SimuSurg guides players through four levels of clinical scenarios designed to deliver progressively challenging tasks in a virtual surgical environment. From the beginning we have intended to make multiple translations of the product, so the majority of the text is generated by Unity itself and so can be easily swapped when translations are ready.

The nominations this year were incredibly strong, and it was a pleasure to interact with everyone and see the other fantastic work at the showcase. It will enable us to promote the valuable game even further. The first issue was solved by having a challenge mode which featured content divided by countries, flags, capital cities, and landmarks. Within the classroom it has been used as supplementary material covering areas already addressed in the class by teachers or as a group activity; where students are paired together so they can assist each others missing geography knowledge, as well as engage in a conversation about the countries to reinforce learning. The winner of Best Student Game was Age of Ec ology developed by High School interns Alexander Wein of Palo Alto, California and Carl Jackson of Andover, Maryland while working as interns at the United States Geologic Survey. This platform made the most sense for us as it is very flexible and well suited to making apps.
The year was focused on removing restrictions that seemed to be hampering more than helping the Challenge. . This way the teacher can access the content they intend to use in the class. To find the aliens players can fly around the world, match up countries, race against an alien friend, and solve clues to pin-point the locations of these creatures. The finalists displayed a wide variety of serious game applications for all skill levels and backgrounds including: vehicle maintenance, geo-location, preventive medicine, emergency response management, environmental management, creature identification in a natural habitat, chemical interactions, ancient civilizations, and urban warfare.
