Many people expect the next Macbook Air to have retina. No drop outs, no clipping or glitches. But for my 20-25 track projects it works, loads and runs flawless. And while there's no dedicated microphone port, the headphone jack apparently supports the use of Apple's Earphones with Remote and Mic. And the point I've been wandering towards over the last few pages is that if you really want the beautiful design, you can purchase a new MacBook Air with the confidence that it will be capable of running music and audio software with a decent level of performance.
. I can say for 100% certainty that my usage of Logic on the Macbook Air does work without any problems, performance wise. I would not buy an i7 Macbook Air if you need more power; buy a Macbook Pro, or iMac, or MacPro. Forth I'm not sure I'd be willing to trust flash drives for my work and these are pretty limited size wise, your options being 64 or 128gb. If you are going to run many virtual instruments or synths, then the Macbook Air would possibly not be powerful enough. For me it's a no brainer to buy refurb. Select any file in the Finder, hit the Space bar and boom, you get a quick look at the contents of the file without having to open it in a compatible app.
Some might argue that the i7 would be better for Logic regarding the usage of plugins, synths, etc. If you're really dependent on a higher resolution screen then I'd say you want retina. Taking a look at it, yes, I can see really small pixels. Project files are mostly stored in iCloud and on an external drive. So today i went into my local apple store again, and compared the 2 air sizes.
The reality, of course, is if you choose the MacBook Air, you want the MacBook Air. Like the PowerMac Cube, the original MacBook Air was also aesthetically stunning and arguably suffered from the same problem of being too expensive for the features it offered. For audio work, this kind of performance is a dream. Make sure you select Option when you click Go to open your user library, not the root library? Only missing the gigabit ethernet to cluster my mac pro using vienna ensemble pro. It's not strictly about the features; it's about the beautiful design. With my old 2 channel interface there was less latency.
Are you scared of purchasing an underpowered machine, or spending too much cash on a monster that you will always leave hungry for more? Trash the desired one or both depending on the issue. For those who don't remember the Cube, it had a beautifully designed enclosure into which Apple's engineers had managed to shrink a PowerMac to about a quarter of its usual size. After so many seconds playback, maximum usually being 20-30 seconds, Logic crashes reliably as ever. I went to the apple store and a Genius found the solution to my problem. Taking a look at it, yes, I can see really small pixels. Both professionals and amateurs are encouraged to post on this subreddit.
If I am using my external sound card the playback from Logic is perfect, no crashes at all. My desktop is a 3. But on both machines, Logic Pro runs exactly the same. I use it for recording at home as well as for live shows, for running my backing tracks and automation of my guitar rig. As stated in the title I will mostly use it for logic pro and maybe later on for video editing. Support requests are fine, but the scope of the subreddit is everything relevant to Logic Pro and its related software.
You said that you have external hard drives for more space. One of the Air's key areas of compromise is evident in terms of its connectivity. Piracy is not tolerated on this subreddit. You might want to post in the Digital Audio forum also. I can't say this is a big loss; this 'feature' always seemed like a gimmick and was usually the first thing I switched off on my previous MacBook Pros. It would be interesting to see how many can it handle, since I'm also planning getting an Air to move heavy projects.
If you prefer your laptop Macs to be exceedingly portable, whether for aesthetics or application, the MacBook Air really is a superb machine. That would be the only thing I would change. While having a smaller desktop computer is nice, it's essentially a luxury that can be lived without. Its a mistery to me… Maybe I should try to re-load all the sound libraries. The new is designed to be just that with an extremely competitive price tag and wide platform compatibility with your existing recording environment.
Best of all, though, is the resolution. We welcome you to actively participate in the community if you a content creator. That should be more than enough. Disappointingly, these are the same processors used in the previous MacBook Air. Reddit is not a realtime platform.
